“I knew all these amazing people long before any of us booked this job and we were all friends prior, even worked together many times in Jamaica as well, so it was just another meet up with good friends that you haven’t seen in a while. Over 100 million people worldwide have seen the musical and it has earned numerous awards and honours, including six Tony Awards.Īll five have known each other for years four - Price, Hart, Frater and Morris are dancers who were trained and performed with local companies Dance Theatre Xaymaca, Stella Marris Dance Ensemble, L’Acadco and the National Dance Theatre Company, respectively, while Strachan is a local singer and dancer in local circles and the sister of renowned soprano Ana Strachan.īut it is their performance in The Lion King which brought them together recently.

Oraine Frater and Tara Price, who are with the UK touring company, Samantha Strachan from The Lion King in Spain, and Benton Morris and Gavin Hart from the international touring company based in Asia had a meet up at a Corporate Area restaurant to trade stories from their work with the the show which is Broadway’s third longest-running show in history, and has grossed more than $1 billion, making it the highest grossing Broadway production of all time. Recently five Jamaicans who are presently contracted to various Lion King touring companies met up in Kingston for an opportunity to share their experiences. During this time a number of Jamaicans have performed as members of the cast for various touring companies all over the world.

Renowned Jamaican-born Garth Fagan choreographed the hit production which has been running at theatres globally since 1994. Jamaica has had a long history with the award-winning Disney musical The Lion King.
